Eventually you gotta just learn to accept that it's a weird old system from the early 2000s. Obviously good players will be ranked high, but there's also plenty of good players with significant playtime that are oddly low. Usually its cause they have aggressive playstyles that results in them...
I have seen servers running HLX that managed to keep the messages entirely hidden from chat, but I'd have no idea how to do that. I'd personally be in favor of an occasional reminder in chat notifying you of how to turn the messages off like Shens said.
